Residents and visitors of Calcasieu Parish, which is part of Lake Charles, Louisiana, will be prohibited from vaping and smoking in parish buildings and parks following a unanimous vote by the Calcasieu Parish Police jury.
The ordinance was passed on Thursday and will not affect RV or campground sites, private residences, restaurants or bars, according to KPLC-TV, an ABC affiliate station.
The ban would have been enacted in January, but KPLC-TV reports that the date was moved to March so that parish officials could properly notify the public of the policy change. Following a six-month period, the parish police jury will review the ordinance and rectify any issues that may have come up during that time.
Dane Bolin, the assistant parish administrator, proposed the ordinance last month and told several jurors that the ban would be enforced by educating the 25 percent of parish residents who smoke and vape.
Bolin does not foresee enforcing the ban through citations.
